Small Town Famous

A small-town sheriff embraces his newfound fame while confronting the enduring legacy of the serial killer whose capture made him a celebrity.

About the Film

When Sheriff Dale Morgan captures the country's most wanted serial killer, he becomes an overnight celebrity. What begins as local pride – a parade, a television interview, a mention in the national press – quickly accelerates beyond anything Dale had imagined or wanted.

Small Town Famous examines the corrosive effects of fame and the moral compromises made when justice becomes performance. Set against the American heartland, it is an unsettling study of how celebrity culture reaches into even the most intimate communities – and what it costs to be seen.

Creative Team

George Ratliff is the writer and director of Joshua (Fox Searchlight, 2007) and the documentary Hell House. His work is characterised by a precise, methodical approach to domestic dread – an interest in what ordinary environments conceal. Small Town Famous extends that sensibility into genre territory.

Jonathan Dorfman has produced independent features at the international level for over twenty years. Dave Matthews, Grammy Award-winning musician and 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, co-produces. Both have worked with Ratliff previously on Joshua.
