Choke

2008 · Dir. Clark Gregg · 92 min · Fox Searchlight · Sundance

A sex addict deliberately chokes in restaurants to survive. Based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk.

Synopsis

Victor Mancini is a medical school dropout, sex addict, and con artist operating in a world of deliberately created catastrophe. He stages choking incidents in upscale restaurants, bonding himself to the strangers who rescue him – and collecting their money.

Meanwhile, his mother is institutionalised and barely recognises him, and the identity he has constructed around his dysfunction is beginning to fracture.

Adapted by Clark Gregg from Chuck Palahniuk's novel and directed by Gregg himself, Choke stars Sam Rockwell, Anjelica Huston, and Kelly Macdonald. It premiered at Sundance in 2008 and was distributed by Fox Searchlight.

"Some stretches are very funny, although the laughter is undermined by the desperation and sadness of the situations"
